The Wolf vs the Vampire by Lauretta Hignett was my first dive into her work, and I can confidently say that it won’t be the last. From the first page, I was hooked by the dry wit, fast pacing, and wonderfully chaotic energy of the story. This is urban fantasy with teeth, claws, and… feathers?

The Premise

Daphne has just moved to Philadelphia to begin a new chapter in her life as a childcare worker, and to be with her boyfriend, who is a witch. Unfortunately, she discovered her assumptions were wrong.

Seeking revenge for her Aunt Marche’s murder, she also plans to kill the leader of the witches. But Daphne is forced to work with Romeo by the “alpha” so her plan has to wait. Things get interesting from there. Do I sense a potential enemies-to-lovers in future books? We’ll have to wait and see.

What I loved

Daphne, the main character, is delightfully quirky and just the right amount of unhinged. She’s smart, sarcastic, and slightly psychotic in the most entertaining way. Her voice carries the story with humor and edge, making every scene feel fresh and unpredictable.

And then there’s Dwayne—the goose shifter. Yes, you read that right. A goose. I’ll admit, it threw me for a second, but Dwayne absolutely steals the show. I’ve read a lot of urban fantasy, but I’ve never encountered a goose shifter before. It’s bizarre, brilliant, and adds an unforgettable twist to the shifter trope. Apparently, he’s introduced in another series set in the same world, so now I’ve got more books to add to my TBR list. Also, it is implied that Dwayne is not just a shifter, but a much more dangerous creature.

This book hits the sweet spot between action-packed and laugh-out-loud funny. The plot is fast-paced, full of unexpected turns, and nearly impossible to put down. The world-building is rich without ever feeling overwhelming, and the banter between characters is top-tier.

If you love urban fantasy that doesn’t take itself too seriously but still delivers solid storytelling, great characters, and a whole lot of fun, The Wolf vs the Vampire is a must-read. I’m already looking forward to where this series goes next—and yes, I’m definitely reading the series where Dwayne makes his first entrance.
