Book two of the Blood Destiny series opens with Mack keeping a low profile in Scotland. Fired from her bartending job for self-defense, she was searching for new employment when she discovered a bookstore run by a kind elderly woman. Though Mrs. Alcoon seems to know more than is humanly possible, she gratefully accepts the job offer. While working one morning, a Fae, Sol, shows up and wants to know what she is. She can still hear Corrigan in her head and she worries he will find her. However, when things go awry, Mack has to rescue Mrs. Alcoon from the mages while evading Corrigan and the Brethren.

Category Key Points
What I loved - interesting plot
  - world-building
  - sassy female lead
What didn't resonate with me - some descriptions felt overwritten
Tropes/Themes - found family
  - good vs. evil
  - mythological creatures
  - magic artefacts
  - self-discovery journey

I loved the twists and turns of the plot. Writing style is pretty solid and character development keeps you wondering whats everyone's motives when it comes to our heroine.

I love that the romance in this book develops gradually, not instantly. Mack resists admitting any feelings, fighting against them at every opportunity. I wish there had been more scenes with Mackenzie and Corrigan interacting. A nice mix of action, suspense and a little romance. I'm looking forward to more!

For the first time, Mack is alone, running from the Brethren after being kicked out of the Cornwall pack. She can't hide in the backcountry with everyone hunting for her. She's being hunted by the Brethren for being a rogue shifter, pursued by Corrigan, stalked by a mysterious fae, and even attracting the attention of the mages. The stakes are high.

I love that we get a little more expansion of the world-building without it being overwhelming. The new characters are intriguing as they are mysterious and I find myself invested in their fate. I can't say more without spoiling the plot, but I can't wait to read the next installment and see what happens to a certain old lady and the mysterious Fae.

Our final verdict:
4.50
