I first read Undine’s Blessing by Tessa Hastjarjanto during the final round of BBNYA last year, and I’m thrilled to take part in this book tour to share my thoughts. This novel is a beautifully written, enchanting journey into a world filled with magic, mystery, and self-discovery. Although it’s YA, I’d say it gives off more of a middle grade feel. That being said, it can be enjoyed at any age.

What didn't resonate with me - slow pacing
  - mystery solved too fast
Themes & Tropes - coming of age

A Lush World-building

One of the book’s strongest elements is its exquisite world-building. The underwater scenes are atmospheric, described in such vivid detail that I felt immersed in their beauty. The islands and their surroundings are equally enchanting, adding depth and atmosphere to the story. The contrast between human and nymph societies is intriguing, but what truly captivated me were the other magical creatures Marella interacts with and the way water magic is woven into the story.

A Journey of Growth and Courage

Marella, the protagonist, isn’t the typical daring and adventurous heroine. Instead, she is a dutiful daughter burdened by responsibilities, hesitant to embrace the unknown. However, watching her overcome her fears and step into her true potential was deeply rewarding. Her growth is at the heart of this coming-of-age story, making her journey both relatable and inspiring. The way she learns to wield her magic and embrace her identity was one of my favorite aspects of the book.

Writing Style and Pacing

Tessa Hastjarjanto’s prose is lyrical and captivating, adding to the whimsical tone of the book. The descriptions are rich without being overwhelming, and the dialogue feels natural. My only minor critique is the pacing. It leans toward the slower side, which may not appeal to those who prefer fast-paced, high-stakes plots. Additionally, I felt the central mystery was solved a bit too quickly. However, this didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment, as the heart of the story lies in Marella’s journey rather than the suspense.

Final Thoughts

Undine’s Blessing is a heartwarming, whimsical tale perfect for readers who enjoy beautifully crafted fantasy worlds, thoughtful character development, and magical adventures centered on self-discovery. If you love lyrical prose and enchanting underwater settings, this book is a must-read. While the pacing may be slower than some might prefer, the depth of emotion and immersive storytelling more than make up for it. Highly recommended!
